Aldersbach is one of the clutch of exciting churches near Straubing in northeast Bavaria. We had a feast in store for us hoping to explore three of these 5th September 2019. Visitors to Baroque churches in Germany will be used to finding splints and locked doors as restorations take place. So no visiting Aldersbach interior. The photos here are taken from posters and offer tantalising evidence of what we missed.
Aldersbach was a Cistercian foundation and the present church is 1718-1720.The architect was the Italian Domenico Magzin. There is no crossing and the choir is substantially narrower than the nave. It is probably based on Gothic foundations.
The Asam brothers came to work in the already designed interior. The result is a glorious mix of white, brown and green. The ceiling by CD Asam of the Christmas vision of St Bernard shows the influence of Pozzo through the use of ballustrades to create illusion.
The high altar was designed by Johann Matthias Gotz around 1732. The pulpit is from 1748 by Joseph Deutschmann. Both were from nearby Passau.
My consolation for not getting inside the church was a superb plum kuchen and coffee in a nearby cafe.
