Weissenau

Weissenau was an early start from our flat in Obermarchtal 27 August 2019 : an uncrowded little town  with a virtually empty church greeted us. This was a Praemonstratensian outpost from 1145 to 1802. It was an Imperial Abbey. It was badly damaged in the Peasants' War in the 1520s. Rebuilding in Baroque style began in the abbey in 1708 and the abbey church  in 1717. The church was finished  in 1724. The architect was Franz Beer.

The church is a large wall pillar example with 6 bay nave, slight hint of transepts,  a long apsidal choir and twin towered facade. The latter acts as a link to the accompanying monastic buildings.

The interior is light, spacious and grand. There are high arched openings  created through the wall pillars (see above)
The choir is different : lower and rather tunnel like. Beer had to retain the original footprint rather than build an oval with six piers to carry a dome and lantern.

Fine stucco work by Franz Schmutzer.
